When a person throws a punch, are the same muscles used when doing push-ups?

The power in your punches comes all the way from your hips and your legs so squats are very effective. Of course, your shoulders are responsible for the delivery so military presses also helps.

Get two 5 pound weights. Get into your stance and throw a jab followed by a right hand. Do this as quickly as you can while maintaining good form until your arms tire out. Then put down the weights, give your arms a minute or so to rest. Then repeat the exercise without the weights and see how much faster your punches are. This exercise improves your speed and speed is power in boxing. A fast hit stings and the quicker you can return your hands to guard, the fewer hits you will receive in return.

There are lots of exercises you should do to train for boxing…. running, swimming if you have access to pool or lake, jump rope, push-ups, sit-ups, squat thrusts, kettle bell swings, weightless squats, bench press. Go to crossfit.com for more ideas.

Use gloves. Do each of these for 3 min then rest for a min. It’s good to practice in rounds just like how you would fight. Also bob and weave as you are doing these, don’t stay stationary. This here is a great order…
